And doesn’t it feel good

It’s taken a while but I’m clean now. I look back on my dependency and hate all those wasted years. What I could have achieved if I had never been hooked or if I had cleaned up my act sooner? Like most people with a problem I didn’t accept it was a problem though. Getting clean took a significant event in order for me to take a good hard look at what I was doing! It happened like this…

I got back from a week away with my family and fired up the trusty old desktop. It is a hex core AMD machine that I assembled myself (of course) a few years ago. It was running Windows 7 Ultimate (not sure what was so ultimate about it) and up it came eventually and I logged into the domain (yes, of course I run an AD domain at home, don’t you). After a few moments I got the dreaded blue screen of death, not something I’d seen for a while, but I sure knew what is was. I hard reset the machine and got the usual disk repair message…

Except at the end it told me that it couldn’t repair the disk. Well, to be honest that was no surprise as it never has before so why I thought that it would be different this time I don’t know. Another hard reset and I had something new; an unrecoverable I/O error. That’s it, no other information, just that. No clue as to which I/O device it might have been struggling with, nothing. After an hour of struggling to get the system up I decided that I was through with Microsoft and all its Windows minions. I was going to free myself once and for all from this tyranny.

I tested the hardware and found it was fine. And while yes, of course I could have reinstalled Windows, I was then facing the inevitable challenges of it already being registered and having to beg Microsoft to please let me reregister it. Then of course the many hours of downloading updates, fighting against the bandwidth needs of my son’s PS4. I live in a very rural area so high speed broadband doesn’t mean what you think it does… Then of course the same set of struggles putting on Microsoft applications that are massively bloated, have similar licence challenges and will also want to download their own set of updates. I’d be lucky if I was up and running a week later.

All of this flashed across my mind and in a brief instant I considered the option and discarded it. No, that way was not for me. I had walked that road too many times before and where had it got me? Enslaved to Microsoft, trapped with an operating system which changed it’s look and feel drastically in every iteration, taking away much loved features and replacing them with things that my hardware struggled to live with (no, I don’t have a touch screen as why would I want fingerprints all over my monitor). Instead I did what I should have done years ago, I downloaded the best desktop version of my Favourite UNIX – PC-BSD. The new version only runs on 64bit (unlike FreeBSD which it is based upon), but that isn’t a problem with my hex core AMD.

An three hours of downloading later (I did say I had pretty poor broadband – thanks Demon) and 15 minutes of installing later and here I am. A free man; cleared of my dependence on Microsoft and looking forward to life. An of course the core system is the same as the other OS which I use, Mac OS X. Both are based heavily on FreeBSD (as is my son’s PS4).

And with such a huge range of applications to choose from, all of which are free, I’m entering a strange new world where my computer can do exactly what I want it to, in the way I want it to and somewhat faster and cooler than it did before.

Wish me luck in my new Microsoft free adventure.

So have we remediated Windows XP?

by Admin 3. July 2014 16:27

There has been a lot of talk about Windows XP being remediated out of our environments so I thought I’d look at the data from the Blog Website. This may not be totally representative as I get an average of just a few thousand page views per week but what I’m seeing is interesting.

As you can see from the chart and the trend line (yes of course I used Splunk to do this) There was a steady decline in the percentage of XP hits which took the proportion of Windows XP machines I was seeing down from a high of around 75% to a low of just under 5% shortly after the April deadline for support. That’s pretty much what I would have expected, but what is strange is that I’m now seeing is an upward trend which has Windows XP page viewers peaking back above 40% as of the first week in July.

Did people turn of their XP machines to see if their neighbors machines burst into flame on April 9th but gradually turn them back on as the expected disaster didn’t happen? Perhaps network and Web heads blocked XP from accessing the Web to lessen the chance that these machines would catch a cold, but relented as users complained? I’m open to hear other theories, it certainly had me intrigued. Having done a little more analysis I think I may have discovered the cause. The Windows 8 trend curve was the inverse of the XP curve. People seem to have switched to Windows 8 only to ditch it again and go back to XP. Throughout this the Windows 7 line has remained remarkable flat. It seems that a Windows 7 switch wasn't an option.

What I have noticed is that most of the XP activity I’m seeing originates from China. Perhaps the upgrade options are somewhat more limited there?

Let me know what you are seeing and what your companies are doing?

Building Big Data applications is easy - Part 2

Splunk Web Framework - Part 2

Last time I showed you how easy it was to create a Splunk Web Framework App of your own. Of course the App didn't do very much so this time I'm going to show you how you can add some core Splunk functionality to it.

Before I do that however I want to talk a little bit about the App we created and the Splunk Web Framework in general. Let's start be looking again at the App. You will remember that the creation process created a home.html file deep within the Splunk application folders. For us, with our app called smon the file was created in $SPLUNK/etc/apps/smon/django/smon/templates. This is the first (and currently the only) HTML file for our App. We can add addiitional files here, all with a similar format.

You will recall that one unfamiliar feature of these files is that they contained directives between {% and %}. These are django directives and though we don't need to know django we do need to know a little about what goes where within these sections of the template file. The first directive {% extends "splunkdj:base_with_account_bar.html" %} is used to build the basics of the template we start with. This makes our template inherit things from another base template file called base_with_account_bar.html and that is why our App has started life with a menu bar and a footer. If we decide that we don't want those things we inherit from a different base template. Try changing this to be just base_with_basic_styles.html to see the difference. You will need to load this bypassing browser cache or you may see no change. Take a look in $SPLUNK/etc/apps/framework/server/splunkdj/templates to see the different base templates that you can inherit from.

The other django directives do different things and we shall explore some of those now.

Actually doing something

So the first thing to do is to build a markup framework for our App. this bit is very simple because it is just HTML. We need to layout how we want things to look and to create a framework for our data to live in. If you aren't familiar with HTML and CSS then you can just take an existing Web page and use that or you can go to one of the many sites which will produce a CSS/HTML template for you. The existing HTML framework lives inside the {% block content %} and {% endblock content%} django directives. That is to say it is between these two. It currently looks like this:

    <div>
        <div class="main-area">
            <p>Template message: {{message}}</p>
            <p class="muted">You should also look in the JavaScript console...</p>
        </div>
    </div>

This is pretty standard and simple markup; hopefully you agree, it is a couple of nested DIV's and the {{message}} element is not HTML but another django directive, which is how it passes variables into the HTML. What we are going to do now is to replace this section with our own HTML to allow us to place our tables charts and other elements in order to display our Splunk data. You can put your own HTML in here; my HTML is below:

<div class="dashboard-body container-fluid main-section-body" data-role="main>
  <div> class="dashboard-header clearfix>
    <h2>Reader Information</h2>
    <p class="description">Details about our readers...</p>
    <div class="dashboard-row dashboard-row2">
      <div class="dashboard-cell" style="width: 50%; ">
        <div class="dashboard-panel">
          <div class="dashboard-element">
            <div class="dashboard-head">
            <h3>Operating Systems</h3>
          </div>
          <div class="dashboard-body">
           {% table id="table_searchresults" managerid="search_resulttable"
drilldown="none" pageSize="13"%} </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="dashboard-cell" style="width: 50%;"> <div class="dashboard-panel"> <div class="dashboard-element"> <div class="dashboard-head"> <h3>Operating Systems</h3> </div> <div class="dashboard-body"> {% chart id="chart_searchresults" managerid="search_resulttable"
type="bar" drilldown="none" height="394" %} </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div>

You will be pretty disappointed by how your App looks but now add this lines to the {% block css %} section and we can fix that.

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"
  href="{{STATIC_URL}}splunkjs/css/dashboard.css"/>

What we did is use some of the default Web Framwework styling by using the dashboard.css stylesheets which then style the Div classes above. You have to use the standard Splunk class names in the Div sections to make this work. Reload your browser and you should see something a little more pleasing.

You will notice that we have two more django directives hidden deep within our HTML:

  {% table id="table_searchresults" managerid="search_resulttable"
drilldown="none" pageSize="13"%}

and

  {% chart id="chart_searchresults" managerid="search_resulttable"
type="bar" drilldown="none" height="394" %}

The first of these is a Splunk django table and the second is a splunk django chart. The problem is that there doesn't appear to be any data. the reason for that is that these are both visualisations. To make them work we need to link them to a search. You will see that we already have the code to do that, we just need to create those searches in the Web Framework. The first thing to notice is that both visualisations use the same search for its data managerid="search_resulttable".

Lets add that now… the best way to do this is to go to your splunk instance and run a search which returns the results that you want. then create a Search manager by copying code like this into the {% block managers %}. For our exapme we need to add the {% block managers %} after the CSS section as it isn't created for us.

{% block managers %}

 {% searchmanager
 id="search_resulttable"
 search='host=Blog2 | rename os_name AS "Operating System" | top "Operating System"'
 app="search"
 cache=True
 %}

{% endblock managers %}

You can see that the search is defined explicitly as part of the search manager. The id is the name referenced in the visualisations. You can have as many search managers in you template as you need.

If all went well you should have a working Splunk app that actually displays some useful data. Mine looks like this:

Next time I'll tell you how to improve this and make it a little bit more slick. In the mean time, play around and see what you can do; get used to adding search managers and visualisations or fiddle around with the HTML markup to see if you can make things fit your need.

Splunk Web Framework - Part 1

Building applications on top of big data is much easier than you may think. To prove it I'm going to show you what I did. But first I need to point out that I'm not a developer, I'm a comercial manager, so if I can do it then I'm pretty sure that you can too.

Many people are very happy to use Splunk and possible add a few applications to it to get fast time to value, but one thing I always drummed into my team at Barclays is that the best tools are invisible. By that I mean that users should get what they need from a tool without having to think about the tool itself and if they can't even tell there is a commercial product there then you are really winning. This was highlighted the other day when I was on the stand at InfoSec. One of our customers was asking about customising the look and feel of Splunk to meet his companies branding. I suggested the Web Framework and he said that it was too difficult. I didn't have time there to show him just how easy it is, but perhaps I can show you...

So lets get started

Of course for this you need to have Splunk installed. Web Framework comes with Splunk 6 but if you are still on Splunk 5 there is a separate download. I strongly recommend upgrading to Splunk 6 though, it is a huge step forward over previous releases and a joy to work with.

The very first thing you need to do is open a command prompt and navigate to $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/framework

If you're using Mac OS X or Unix, enter the following: ./splunkdj createapp smon

This will create a skeleton application for you in $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/smon which you can then easily build upon, here I have chosen the name smon but you can use anything you want. You will need to restart Splunk at this time and the Apps section should have been created in you start page with an application called smon (or whatever you actually used) in there. Clicking on the app will take you to a default application template which doesn't say much, but you can now start to customise that page or add additional pages of your own These pages are in $SPLUNK/etc/apps/smon/django/smon/templates and the page you were just looking at was home.html in that folder. You can also customise the way your smon app looks on your Splunk home page if you intend to access it from here, but you can also navigate directly to it now and the idea of the Web Framework is that you hide Splunk from your users and just give them something which matches their expectations and your corporate look and feel.

If you look inside your home.html file you will see something a bit like this:

{% extends "splunkdj:base_with_account_bar.html" %}

{% load splunkmvc %}

{% block title %}{{app_name}} Home Page{% endblock title %}

{% block css %}
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="{{STATIC_URL}}{{app_name}}/cust
om.css" >

    <style>
        .main-area {
            margin: 0px auto;
            margin-top: 30px;
            margin-bottom: 30px;
            padding: 10px;
            width: 300px;
        }
    <style>
{% endblock css %}

{% block content %}

<div&GT
        <div class="main-area"&GT
            <p&GT>Template message: {{message}}</p&GT
            <p class="muted"&GTYou should also look in the JavaScript console...</
p>
        </div&GT
    </div&GT

{% endblock content%}

{% block js %}
    <script&GT
        console.log("Custom JavaScript Goes Here (look in your template)!");
    </script&GT
{% endblock js %}

But congratulations, you have just created your first Big Data application. It doesn't do very much yet, but we will fix that in part 2.

Building blocks

The Splunk Web Framework is built on a few standard building blocks. The Framework itself is Django (no, not the film) the well known python based web development framework. Don't worry, you can build Web apps without knowing any python at all. In fact you will probably only need python if you want to interact with other subsystems on your server, like a database or directly with the OS. You will need to know a little about the components that Splunk provides, in the way of search managers and visualisations, but we will learn the basics of that next time. If you want a very classy look and feel to this web application then you will probably need to be familiar with HTML and probably CSS3. My skills in HTML hadn't been used in 15 years, but I soon remembered enough of it to get by. I knew no CSS3 at all other than I did know what it stood for, so I needed to learn just enough of that to be dangerous. With CSS it is very easy to change your look and feel or to add standard web components such as menu bars.

If you want your application to have the maximum impact then you will also need to learn a little bit of Javascript. You will certainly need this if you want to use external visualisation elements like D3 charts. In my first app I have added a D3 chart and also some frills like tabbed browsing and chart drilldowns using JavaScript.

Next time

In the next episode I'll look at adding Big Data from Splunk to your application and how you can display and visualise that data and allow your users to interact with it. Don't worry, the next episode won't be any more mentally taxing than this one; I promise. Below is a short movie which shows the very first app I built with the Splunk Web Framework. it allows me to analyse some aspect of who has been reading the blog and shows just what you can do, even as a novice with this powerful Web Framework. I hope it wets your appetite for the next post on this subject.

Wakeup Call

by Admin 15. April 2014 20:04

Sometimes it is good to rekindle old skills; too often the things we learn in our youth and never need again are forgotten, left behind as we develop new and important talents.

In my somewhat misspent youth the British Army, in their infinite wisdom and at some considerable expense decided to teach me electronic engineering. Besides giving me an opportunity to argue with people when they tell me how things work I have not particularly used these powers for good, until recently. When my alarm clock failed to get me into the office on time recently I looked around for a replacement and, not finding anything that met my exacting standards I resolved to make one myself.

One of my very good friends suggested that I use a Raspberry pi, but the thought of having to apply security patches to a clock left me rather cold. Instead I looked around to see what the electronics industry was doing nowadays and discovered a vibrant maker community, with the ubiquitous Arduino at its core. A few short clicks on the Amazon and eBay websites later and I had everything I needed. Well, that isn’t quite true, I had rather more than I needed and a bit of a project on my hands.

In the picture above you can perhaps see where I’m up-to with this project. At its heart is an Arduino Nano which controls all of the other elements. Clearly setting the time with buttons is so 1980 so I opted for an Ethernet module which allowed me to build a small webserver capable of serving a few pages and allowing me to set and change all of the parameters for the device. The display is of course a rather large LCD with four lines of display. I wake to the sounds of Radio Four of course, or any other station, courtesy of the digitally controlled radio module and the time is provided by a small real-time-clock module complete with battery backup. I did consider a Bluetooth module but that would have required me writing an app for my phone or iPad and that seemed like just too much trouble…

I still have things to do of course. I have used up most of the digital i/o’s on the Atmel processor at the heart of this but need to add some buttons to the thing. After all using a web browser to snooze the alarm of turn on the backlight for the LCD seem excessive. I am experimenting with using a voltage divider circuit connected to one of the a/d inputs on the Atmel to allow several buttons to be used without taking up several pins. I also need to find a nice box to mount it all in.

Of course the programming of the Atmel has used a different set of old skills, including very low-level systems and networks programming as I debounce switches and process raw Ethernet frame buffers to get the HTTP portion from the TCP section. My soldering skills have also needed some reviving as the first few solder joints were not exactly up to standards but as I have worked I’ve seen this and all the other skills rapidly improve.

Do these skills contribute directly to my day job now, of course not; but deep down I know that I am a sum of many parts. And it makes sense to get some of those older parts out and give them an airing from time to time.

What old skills do you have which perhaps you haven’t exercised in a while?

Paradigm Shift

by Admin 13. March 2014 13:34

Not words I use lightly, so bare with me a little here.

I want you to stop and think about your IT organisation and how you manage it, what services it provides for you and how you deal with problems and issues with it. Before you do that, I want you to clear you mind; try to remove all of that clutter you have built-up over the years and start from a clean slate. In fact start with your business with no IT at all. Try to imagine what that would be like. I’m old enough to remember something close to that and I can still remember the excitement when Fax was invented!

So have you done that? Can you imagine doing business with no computers, no networks; no mobile devices? I’ll make it a little easier; you can have typewriters (if you are under thirty think of mechanical devices that just do word processing, but backspacing comes in a small bottle with a brush). No emails remember, you have memos internally and letters for the rest of the world. You can have a phone of course but it is tied to your desk by a cord to stop you pacing up and down with it. Well if you can imagine all that you aren’t back very far, only to the seventies really.

Now think about what your business really does. What are the things at the core of it. Obviously if you are a cloud provider your mind is pretty blank at the moment, but perhaps you work in a shop or a bank. Think about the core of your business and what things you absolutely must do to find your customers and give them the service they need and want.

Right, now layer back on all of that IT; but not all at once. Imagine you are given the job of bringing this business into the 21st century. What IT do you bring in? How is it going to help your customers? Some of that IT is going to be a direct help and some of it you only need to support the bits you need. Gradually you will find that indirect IT, the stuff you need to make the useful IT work will increase more an more. Eventually I suspect you will find that you have more support IT than you have core, business essential IT. That can’t be good?

But alas that is a necessary, particularly as the core, business facing IT gets more complicated and the business comes to rely upon it more and more. But suppose you wind back just a little. Before you layer all that support IT on. If you were really designing this all from scratch, can’t you think of a better way of doing this? Really?

We are living in a world that has changed rapidly but never-the-less one which has evolved. That evolution has taken us down paths that may not have been optimal. Perhaps had we known then what the world would look-like we would never have designed it that way? A whole raft of technology areas; enterprise management; security; application management; business intelligence and more; do they really give you what you want and need, or would you do it differently if you could?

In my role I get to visit a lot of companies and talk to them about their IT challenges. I see many companies embrace the next new trend or mega trend with the same old mind-set; Mobile, Cloud, Big Data. They take on these major new technologies and make them bend to their traditional way of doing things. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I see them reaping benefits from those technological innovations but not to the extent they could. A few brave and forward thinking IT managers are however standing back and taking a good hard look at their environments. Often you feel it when you are in their presence. They have a wide-open mind and they will cease on some of the things you say and run with them, and you have to run to keep up. I come away from those meetings exhausted but exhilarated. In many meetings I’m there to explain a product or technology; in a meeting with a true IT innovator I’m there to feed him or her possibilities and ideas for them to connect to their vision.

So before you see another vendor or make another strategic IT decision, take a moment to clear your mind and think about what possibilities there might be in your business.

You might just find your self innovating.

Disaster Recovery Planning

by Admin 22. September 2013 14:19

or how not to be in trouble with your users

Last week I had a service outage due to an incident that I had not properly planned for. Before I tell you about it, I should probably remind you that I run what my wife describes as an overly complicated home network. She is non-technical, so everything is the network and when something doesn’t work the network is down. Fortunately we can agree on one thing; when the network is down it is my fault!

The nature of the outage

Having arrived home after some foreign trip (I may just have been in the Grim North, all trips just blend into one now) I was confronted by a group of dissatisfied users. I say a group, I really mean my wife and daughter. My son is technical so if he had been inconvenienced he probably would have just solved the problem. Upon further inquiry I discover that no one can log into the domain.

Before we go any further I should explain that I run an AD domain at home primarily for my own amusement. I could provide many of the home IT services without this but felt I needed to know more about AD management and so the rest of the family need to be my willing assistants. Running an AD domain really wasn’t a challenge so I decided to make it hard for myself by doing it without the aid of Microsoft. I run a Samba 4 domain, which is possibly one small step beyond experimental software. Don’t tell my wife!

Now I am a little ADHD about resilience so I have standby hot and cold servers ready to spring into action. I have redundant disks in redundant servers that have redundant network cards. Alas I only have the one data centre and spinning up a cloud based solution is a little beyond my means. Besides, if the whole house has gone I suspect my wife won’t let me fiddle with IT! So with all this redundancy, what on earth could have taken my domain out?

Well it would seem that a combination of factors were to blame; aren’t they always? The first problem was that I was running on a single domain controller. My secondary domain controller was down awaiting an upgrade. I could have had it running but I was waiting for a new version of my favourite OS FreeBSD and had decided not to upgrade until I could put the new OS on. I could have had the old version running of course but that was a (poor) decision I had made. So there, right away, was part of my redundancy gone; simply because I had made some operational decisions which had affected my DR solution. I knew what I was doing but did it anyway.

But even so, what about the rest of it; surely I was safe, what went wrong? Well unfortunately I was preparing for the wrong disaster! The disaster I had prepared for was the complete loss of a server. Systems would have detected that on the network and leapt to take action. The disaster I got was the failure of the Domain controller software and nothing else. The software kept running but not in a meaningful way. Nothing detected that there was a problem so my domain controller hummed away providing all other services (DLNA media server, Subversion server etc.) but not domain services or file sharing. As a result the mission critical service of providing access to homework and other files failed silently leaving my most important users unable to access their core applications and data!

And what caused this disaster I hear you ask? Was it some software flaw or perhaps a security violation? Not quite. It would seem that a ladder, left against a wall in my data centre (for that read separate office building near the house) fell over and hit the keyboard on the KVM switch attached to my core server stack. It happened to be switched to my domain controller and worse than that logged in (I know, shock, horror). Whatever set of keyboard codes it produced sent my DC into a tailspin without actually killing it (or interrupting the network stack so it looked dead).

All those preparations I had taken were worthless as I was preparing for the wrong disaster and the wrong set of symptoms. Things were made worse by my own poor operational decisions regarding DR and standby equipment. And what lessons have I learned? Well my ladder is now tied down…

Splunking Email

by Steve Gailey 12. September 2013 17:14

Update

One of the things people have asked me about this topic is “why”, why Splunk your emails in the first place? I thought I’d share a fuzzy screenshot that shows a small dashboard I put together to allow me to look at about seven years of emails. I can do interesting but not particularly useful things like see at what time am I getting emails from people in New York, or from a particular group of people, and what time am I sending to those people.

Slightly more usefully I can see who emails me most and on what subject, and similarly who I am sending emails to and what subject. The most useful thing remains being able to find that very elusive email that you know you sent (or were sent). Splunk always was the tool to find that needle in a haystack and seven years worth of emails represents a pretty big haystack! Naturally you can drill-down into the detail you need in this dashboard.

Happy Splunking

It has seemed like a fairly good idea to me for a while to Splunk my email. How good would it be to be able to analyse who was sending you emails about audit or to immediately find that email you were sent last year about bonuses that had an excel attachment? Better yet, how about analysing who you are communicating with most and what about… Sounds hard to do but that is exactly what Splunk is good at. Some pretty big orgainsations are doing it with their entire company email feed and using the Splunk App for Microsoft exchange to make sense of it all, but I needed something a little more pedestrian. Now the tricky bit; how do you get all your personal emails into Splunk? Well I obsessively save emails so I have lots and lots of PST files full of emails that seemed important at the time. Outlook is pretty poor at processing these large files. Try having a few big ones open from a network share if you don’t believe me…

The trouble is that Splunk can’t interpret PST files. To be honest Microsoft struggles so what chance do the rest of us have? Well now that I don’t work seventeen hours a day I find myself at a loose end at the weekends so I thought I’d tackle this problem. I had already written an application to read PST files (see my previous post) and search them at high speed in memory so I had the beginnings of what I needed. I just needed to do the same sort of thing but to write the headers out to a CSV file for Splunk to process.

Having looked at my old PST files I realised that I had 9 of them totalling about 13GB of old data. So that answered the next question about requirements; I needed to process several files at once, which meant the program needed to be multi-threaded. Actually it all proved remarkably simple to put together and in one afternoon I had a working utility which allowed me to select any number of PST files and which then loaded and worked on them in parallel reading each message in turn and writing the headers out to a file. Fortunately my home built machine is a six core AMD box which this little application kept pretty busy when I ran it for the first time.

I wrote it to update the user on progress as sitting waiting for a file to appear is not the interactive experience I desire. Having created the 9 CSV files I loaded them into my home Splunk server (what do you mean you don’t have one) and in seconds they were indexed and I could start querying. I have to say that it was worth the small effort involved. I can very quickly search by subject, sender, recipient, CC, attachments or anything else that is in the header. I can easily graph out the trends and relationships but best of all I can easily find that elusive email I knew that I had received and having identified it I can go back to the original PST and extract the attachment or read the email. I would put wonderful Splunk screenshots up but I don’t really want you to see my emails, so I suggest you try it for yourself.

PSTHeaders.zip (3.49 mb) Here is the application to extract your PST headers. Let me know if you have any issues with it. Just unzip and run setup to install the application.

Happy Splunking.
